Sustainably upcycling side streams from the salmon processing industry
Fresh salmon is harvested in ocean farms from Norway
Raw material is delivered to Vega Salmon's processing facility in Germany 2-3 days after harvest, just right for the raw material to mature and be ready for filleting
Vega Salmon processes the raw material into different salmon categories (fresh, smoked, value-added) and delivers the offcuts of the production to biomega® Hirtshals via innovative inbound logistics in this joint project
biomega® extracts proteins from the bones and offcuts and demonstrates in-situ spray drying through its continuous enzymatic hydrolysis manufacturing process
biomega® delivers peptides and oils for human consumption, demonstrating a closed loop methodology
How is the project carried out?
Step 1
Fresh salmon is harvested in ocean farms from Norway

What are the objectives?
The LIFE CONQUER project aims to promote the circular economy by funding developments that support a sustainable way of living.
The biomega® facility in Hirtshals was a first-of-its-kind biorefinery, enabling sustainable peptide production, and demonstrates the three main objectives of the LIFE CONQUER project:
- Innovative solutions for extracting proteins from bones
- In-situ spray drying
- Innovative inbound logistics for raw material
