The LIFE CONQUER Project

Sustainably upcycling side streams from the salmon processing industry

The LIFE CONQUER project is a key part of the biomega® strategy to deliver a circular methodology within the farmed salmon value chain. Its main aim is to sustainably leverage a side stream side stream of the salmon processing industry at the state-of-the-art Hirtshals biorefinery, where the raw materials will be upcycled into ingredients for human health & nutrition. The project is funded by a multi-million-Euro grant awarded to biomega® and its partner Vega Salmon in September 2022 from the European Commission as part of its LIFE programme and will run until February 2027.

How is the project carried out?

Step 1

Fresh salmon is harvested in ocean farms from Norway

Step 2

Raw material is delivered to Vega Salmon’s processing facility in Germany 2-3 days after harvest, just right for the raw material to mature and be ready for filleting

Step 3

Vega Salmon processes the raw material into different salmon categories (fresh, smoked, value-added) and delivers the offcuts of the production to biomega® Hirtshals via innovative inbound logistics in this joint project

Step 4

biomega® extracts proteins from the bones and offcuts and demonstrates in-situ spray drying through its continuous enzymatic hydrolysis manufacturing process

Step 5

biomega® delivers peptides and oils for human consumption, demonstrating a closed loop methodology

What are the objectives?

The LIFE CONQUER project aims to promote the circular economy by funding developments that support a sustainable way of living.

The biomega® facility in Hirtshals was a first-of-its-kind biorefinery, enabling sustainable peptide production, and demonstrates the three main objectives of the LIFE CONQUER project:

  • Innovative solutions for extracting proteins from bones
  • In-situ spray drying
  • Innovative inbound logistics for raw material

LIFE CONQUER has become an integral part of our daily business operations.

GHG emissions reduced: The equivalent of 1,600 tonnes of CO2 saved each year
Thermal energy saved: Approximately 23.7Gwh saved each year
Creation of 17 new full-time jobs at the biorefinery from 2023
Water consumption reduced: Efficiency boost of approximately 30,000 tonnes each year
