biomega® biorefinery at Hirtshals is on track & nearing completion

As a leading European bioscience company, specializing in high-quality ingredients for the animal and human health and nutrition markets, Biomega is committed to investigating the latest technological innovations to reduce its carbon footprint.

Our new biorefinery, currently nearing completion at Hirtshals in Denmark, is built on these objectives and follows on the successful upgrade of our flagship site, located near Bergen on the west coast of Norway.

The goal of working towards a more sustainable and circular future is reflected in our company ethos and primary business of managing raw materials in the seafood supply chain – transferring salmon offcuts into high value food and feed products through our unique biorefining process. We are cooperating with key local suppliers of high-quality fresh salmon parts to have long term supply agreements and have received tremendous support from local authorities for the development of the new project.

While production equipment is being delivered and assembled at the site at Hirtshals, parallel work is being done to establish our power supply, and we are firmly on track to commission the facility on time.

Denmark as a country is moving towards being 100% self-sufficient in terms of its gas supply and currently, 30% of gas consumed in the region is sourced from biogas. In line with this objective, the gas installed on site at Hirtshals is sourced from a Danish distribution network. We also look forward to collaborating with Greenport North on the production and use of green energy, including the circular use of surplus energy at the Port of Hirtshals and surrounding areas.

The new facility will extend our capacity by a minimum of 20k MT raw materials to support our growth plans in premium human and petfood nutrition applications. The Hirtshals site is optimally located near our stock supply and an important gateway for salmon into Europe with local volumes growing substantially year-on-year.

The new site will allow for the expansion of our current production capacity and support our plans to grow our new salmon peptide range for the human health and nutrition market in conjunction with our highly successful SalmigoTM range designed for premium petfood segments.
