Research & Development at biomega®

We value inspirational partnerships at biomega®. We have an open innovation network around the world to assist us in delivering the very best in nutrition and vitality
Through our partnerships and collaborations with KitchenTown, Nofima, the University of Bergen, the University of Illinois, the University of Birmingham, and Passion4Food, we ensure ongoing innovation in uncovering novel nutritional benefits of our products, to further enhance our biorefining techniques.

Our work with the University of Birmingham
We have commissioned a comprehensive study in collaboration with researchers at The University of Birmingham, UK, to investigate the potential of our SalMe Peptides and explore how amino acids from salmon peptides are metabolised and absorbed into circulation following ingestion.
The results of the study were positive, with the researchers observing that essential amino acids, crucial for muscle tissue remodelling, were rapidly digested and absorbed into circulation, akin to the efficiency demonstrated by milk protein, renowned for its high-quality protein nutrition that supports muscle health.
Researchers also found that a high concentration of non-essential amino acids appeared in the circulation, exceeding those found with milk protein. This proves SalMe Peptides to be a diverse and sustainable marine protein ingredient – bringing an option in dietary preferences like flexitarian, pescetarian and lactose intolerant, whilst also promoting tissue health and vitality.
Our work with KitchenTown
Through our partnership with KitchenTown, we’re proud to unveil fresh application concepts for our SalMe Peptides, SalMe Collagen Peptides, and SalMe Salmon Oil.
As part of a new consumer-driven marketing strategy to deliver functional food concepts to health and nutrition brands, biomega® worked with KitchenTown Berlin, a food innovation company that helps food and beverage companies develop and commercialise impact-driven products.
biomega® approached KitchenTown to help develop a series of concepts with our SalMe Peptides and SalMe collagen peptides innovation. This included functional soups and ready-to-mix drinks that offer functional benefits in immunity, active nutrition and healthy ageing, alongside sustainable and high-protein snacks to promote circularity in health and nutrition.

Our work with Passion4Food
Our collaboration with Passion4Food is dedicated to pioneering innovative ingredients and, together, we’re pushing the boundaries of traditional petfood formulations. This partnership not only drives product innovation, but also underscores our shared commitment to sustainability, so that we can redefine the possibilities of ingredient sourcing and manufacturing.
In the first study between biomega® and Passion4Food, we explored the potential of our liquid peptide product, Salmigo® Protect L60 as a glycerine replacement. The study showed that Salmigo® Protect L60 can be a nutritional and value-adding alternative to glycerine in petfood formulations. By offering a viable substitute to glycerine, biomega® supports buyers in diversifying their ingredient options while promoting environmentally-friendly practices.
