biomega® Denmark

Our state-of-the-art biorefinery located at the Port of Hirtshals

Initial planning for the Hirtshals facility in Denmark began in 2020 as part of a double-digit million Euro investment from the original founders of biomega® – AMERRA Capital Management and Natixis Investment Managers affiliated asset manager Mirova Natural Capital. In early 2021, the announcement of the new factory was made public and building soon began on the biorefinery. Located at the stunning Port of Hirtshals harbour, the biorefinery was purpose-built on land that was reclaimed from the sea during initial development of the harbour.

By January 2022, the biorefinery was beginning to take shape with the foundations, drains, in-situ cast concrete walls and decking in place. By February, the biomega® team held a topping-off ceremony to commemorate the last beam being placed on top of the structure. In May, the power supply and gas network were installed with help from the Danish distribution network, which is working towards being 100% self-sufficient through sourcing biogas. This is part of a wider campaign movement with Greenport North for the production and use of green energy for the Port of Hirtshals and surrounding areas.

Less than two years since its announcement, the Hirtshals biorefinery was officially opened in December 2022. The grand opening saw biomega® reaffirm its commitment to delivering on its circularity goals as part of the LIFE CONQUER project.

Today, the biorefinery makes use of next-generation technology and top-quality separation equipment to develop premium ingredients for the human health and nutrition market.
