biomega® Norway

Construction of the Skaganeset biorefinery began in 2002 and was completed in the following year

As our flagship production facility, it had an initial capacity of 12,000 metric tonnes per annum, which was later expanded to 30,000 tonnes in 2011 and 55,000 tonnes in 2018.

The biorefinery is located on the picturesque island of Sotra, near Bergen in Norway, and uses our patented and unique continuous enzymatic hydrolysis process to upcycle salmon rest raw materials into premium ingredients.

Skaganeset is equipped with top quality biorefining equipment, including hydrolysis, a centrifugal separation, filtration and evaporation systems. These deliver efficient separation of the various product streams into oil, protein concentrate and partly hydrolysed meal.

Expansion of biorefinery

Continued growth in the pet food market, combined with new opportunities in the human health and nutrition market, meant that Skaganeset had outgrown its initial capacity in several areas of production. In 2021, several investments were completed to increase capacity, improve quality and optimise logistics. A major investment was the completion of the modernised raw materials reception facility, which included a significantly expanded cold storage area.
